Banking Card (Visa debit) - more secure than cash

Banking Card (Visa-Debit)

Why do you get a new Banking Card?

Your previous Banking Card (debit card) is equipped with the “Maestro” payment procedure from Mastercard International Inc. which will no longer be supported in Germany and a large number of European countries from 01.07.2023. Due to the discontinuation of the “Maestro” payment procedure, you will no longer be able to use your existing BankCard as usual for payments and cash withdrawals outside Germany, such as for shopping or refuelling in France or Luxembourg. In addition, foreign terminal payment systems are increasingly being used in retail or gastronomy; your previous Banking Card will also no longer be accepted there in the future.

What can the new Banking Card (Visa debit) do in comparison:

Services at a glance

Your banking card (Visa debit) is accepted wherever you see the corresponding symbols and logos.

The ATM symbol is the acceptance mark for the ATM network in Germany. Here you can withdraw cash using your BankCard and your personal PIN.

You can find the Visa logo on all continents worldwide. You can withdraw cash with your Banking Card at all ATMs marked with the Visa logo. You can also make cashless payments at cash points displaying the Visa logo using your Banking Card and personal PIN.

The EUFISERV symbol, short for “European Savings Banks Financial Services”, is the acceptance symbol for the ATM network of the European savings banks.

Your Banking Card (Visa debit) also has the girocard contactless function. This allows you to make your payments at the merchant checkout also contactless.

If the “wave symbol” is displayed on a card, you can use it to make contactless payments. The card is equipped with a chip and uses NFC technology (Near Field Communication). With this technology, a connection can be established between the card and the payment terminal over a few centimetres. A card with NFC technology does not necessarily have to be taken out of the wallet, but other radio chip cards can then interfere with the connection, so that the payment process can be interrupted.
